Ready to finally learn how to play American Mahjong? Mahjong 101 is designed for complete beginners — no experience required!

During this three-hour class, Mahj Girl Society will take you from A to Z, teaching you everything you need to know to understand the game, build a hand, and confidently start playing your very first game.

We’ll cover:

The Mahjong tiles, suits, winds, dragons and jokers
How to read and understand the NMJL card
How to choose a hand and identify possible lines
How to set up and deal
The Charleston and passing tiles
Calling tiles, exposures and using jokers
Picking, discarding and progressing through a game
How to declare Mahjong
Basic strategy, etiquette and common beginner mistakes
Plenty of guided practice so you can put everything together

A Better Way to Learn

We’ve upgraded our teaching setup! Our new PA system makes it easier for everyone in the room to hear, and our live video feed from the teaching table means you’ll be able to clearly see the tiles, examples and demonstrations no matter where you are sitting.

$25 per person – Includes your NMJL card
Perfect if you don't already have the current National Mah Jongg League card.

$15 per person – Class Only
Choose this option if you already have your NMJL card. Please bring your card with you to class.

By the end of the evening, our goal is simple: to take you from “I have no idea what any of this means” to sitting down and playing your first game of Mahjong.
